Werder Bremen have made a significant off the pitch transfer this winter, bringing in the highly-respected Johannes Jahns from Red Bull Salzburg.
Knowing that there were also several other career options for him, we are very pleased that Johannes decided on our path. We are facing major and complex challenges in professional football. That's why we want to spread the diverse tasks over several shoulders in order to position Werder Bremen well for the future.
Jahns, who was born in Bremen, will officially return to his home city on July 1 as a squad planner, where he will be responsible for scouting and recruiting.
The 40-year-old (pictured at a TransferRoom Summit) has been Sports Coordinator at Salzburg since 2020, working closely with Sporting Director Christoph Freund.
In addition to Jahns joining ahead of the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, Werder Sporting Director Clemens Fritz is to take on more of the responsibilities of Frank Baumann, Managing Director for Football, including personnel and budget decisions.
Fritz will also have a greater say in shaping the strategy at Werder.
Baumann said: "Knowing that there were also several other career options for him, we are very pleased that Johannes decided on our path. We are facing major and complex challenges in professional football. That's why we want to spread the diverse tasks over several shoulders in order to position Werder Bremen well for the future."
Jahns added: "It is something special for me and a great challenge to be able to help shape the sporting area at Werder Bremen. I make a very conscious decision to go down the Werder path and hope to be able to contribute my experience and skills in a profitable way and also provide new impetus."
Fritz said of his additional responsibilities: "Being responsible for the budget and discipline of professional football with all its facets and also developing the club's strategy are further important steps in my personal development which we can shape the future of Werder Bremen in a positive way."
