Top Swiss club confirm that Heiko Vogel, their former Head Coach, is to return as Sporting Director.
We are very happy to have found an absolute expert for this important function in Heiko. He knows the club and the environment, he knows what it takes to be successful and he has gained a lot of experience in leading teams at various clubs in Germany over the past few years.
Vogel will officially start back at Basel in January, and will be responsible for all day-to-day football operations.
Between 2009 and 2012, Vogel was Assistant Coach and then Head Coach of FCB. He has most recently been coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach II, the Bundesliga club's reserve team that play in the fourth tier, and has also held the same role at Bayern Munich II and Sturm Graz.
Former FCB winger Valentin Stocker, who retired in the summer of 2022 and joined the club's scouting department, is being trained for the Sporting Director role, but the club said this "step would have come too early."
FCB President David Degen said: "We are very happy to have found an absolute expert for this important function in Heiko. He knows the club and the environment, he knows what it takes to be successful and he has gained a lot of experience in leading teams at various clubs in Germany over the past few years.
"We expect him to support, lead and develop the coaching staff and the entire team in the best possible way as Sporting Director and to contribute his knowledge and his great passion for sporting success."
