Where is the Team Rating Impact seen?

Team Rating Impact is one of the elements of data visible on a Head Coach’s profile on TransferRoom. VIP members get exclusive access to over 5,000+ Head Coach profiles as part of their membership, at no extra cost.

Clubs will see the rating in the Performance section of a Head Coach’s profile, alongside xG Impact and Squad Value.

Here’s an example of the Team Rating Impact on Roberto De Zerbi’s profile:

How is the Team Rating Impact calculated?

The TR Team Rating considers all domestic league matches over the past three years, assessing the results based on three criteria:
  • Goals scored (the result)
  • Expected goals
  • Non-shot expected goals: a model of the match based on possession and dangerous passes

The scores are scaled to give more weight to recent matches. They also factor in the quality of opposition and competitions.

Team Rating Impact is calculated by looking at each team that a Head Coach has managed over the last ten years and assessing the difference between their squad rating at the beginning of a Head Coach’s tenure and at the end (or now). An average is taken across all teams, with more weight given to recent years giving an objective view of whether a Head Coach typically improves their teams.

How can clubs use the Team Rating Impact?

Working out the extent to which a Head Coach has improved the teams they have managed is challenging. But whether they make a team better is fundamental to evaluating their ability.

Typically, an increase in the Team Rating correlates with transfer spend, making it hard to isolate the contribution of a Head Coach on squad improvement. But by considering the average of our new Team Rating Impact for all of a Head Coach’s clubs, the impact of a big spending spree an experienced Head Coach has had at a single club is reduced.
