TransferRoom's Potential Rating explained
by Becca Carr

All you need to know about our new Potential Rating, how it's calculated, and how you can use it when assessing young talent.

Potential Rating is a quick indicator of a player's potential future ability, in an optimistic scenario.
TransferRoom

Introducing TransferRoom's new Potential Rating for players, designed to help clubs and agents make a more informed, data-driven assessment of a young player’s future ability.

The more valuable data available to clubs when recruiting players on TransferRoom, the more informed decision they can make on the player's suitability. The potential future ability of a player might affect their playing time at a club, how they impact results and their current and future Expected Transfer Value (xTV).

On the other hand, selling clubs or agents can use Potential Rating when pitching their players to recruiting clubs.

Where is the Potential Rating seen?

A player's Potential Rating can be seen on a player's profile next to their current rating:

Blog - Yann MVila Available - 16x9 (2)-2

It is also seen on the player card when searching for a player or receiving a pitch:

Blog - Luka Sucic League Benchmark - 16x9 (4)-1

How is the Potential Rating calculated?

A player’s potential is a prediction of the level his Player Rating could reach in an optimistic scenario. It is defined as the top 10% of outcomes of historical benchmarks for players of the same position, who were at a similar level at the same age as the player is now.

To calculate a player's Potential Rating, we take the following steps:

  1. For any given player we collect the benchmark set of all players in the same position who had a similar Player Rating at the same age.
  2. Then we look at the maximum rating the benchmark players peaked at during their career, and sort those largest to smallest.
  3. We take the 90th percentile of these maximum ratings as the player's potential - i.e. they have a 1 in 10 chance of reaching this level.

Note: the smallest benchmark rating in that list by definition is the same as the player's current rating. Therefore potential can never be lower than current rating.

Predictive modelling is used to support the projections in cases where a player has very few historical comparisons.

Does the Potential Rating change depending on who is looking at it?

No, a player’s Potential Rating is the same regardless of who is looking. It is designed to be an objective number and allow quick comparison of players across any club or league.

Every player on TransferRoom that has a Player Rating will now also have a Potential Rating.
