How cross-continental transfer took just four days

Knowing there was a market for one of their players, but not necessarily a specific buyer, Club Sporting Cristal, TransferRoom's first members from Peru, took advantage of the Plus Pitch tool to complete a sale in record time.

'The quickest deal we'd done in years'

 

After an impressive season on loan with Pumas UNAM in Liga MX and the CONCACAF Champions League (pictured), Club Sporting Cristal knew there was an appetite in North America for winger Washington Corozo.

 

But moving a player out of South America has rarely been an easy task, as Sporting Cristal Chief Scout Guido Bravo explains: “In the past, maybe we would have 10 calls with the club and another 10 calls with the players’ agent, and even then you don’t know what’s happening in between. It’s never very transparent, and it takes time.”

 

Knowing where Corozo wanted to play his football, Sporting Cristal took a more direct approach on TransferRoom, making 30 clubs in Major League Soccer and Liga MX aware of his availability with a targeted Plus Pitch.

 

Less than a week later, Austin FC were announcing a six-month loan deal for the Ecuador international, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the MLS season.

 

Bravo tells TransferRoom: “They were attractive leagues for him and for us, because as Sporting Cristal we are used to selling players there and seeing them develop. So we Plus Pitched Washington to 30 clubs on TransferRoom. Within two days, Austin FC sent me a message. One day later we had a video call. One more day and we had an offer.

 

“It was the quickest deal we’d done in years because the communication was from club to club.

 

“When Austin FC wanted to know about the player’s conditions, I gave them his agent’s number and they talked one or two times. Then they put the numbers down on paper and that was it. It was all very, very fast.”

 

Alert clubs to unknown possibilities

 

Using a Plus Pitch for the first time resulted in instant success for the Lima-based club.

 

“The Plus Pitch really helps because even without knowing what the other club is looking for, you can present them with some opportunities,” continues Bravo. “Clubs sometimes don't know they're looking for that opportunity until it’s presented to them. It’s the best way to make lots of clubs aware in a direct way of a player’s availability.”

 

For Sporting Cristal, Corozo’s move to MLS is part of a wider strategy to open up connections in more markets via TransferRoom.

 

Bravo told TransferRoom at a Deal Day: “MLS and Mexico for us are two big leagues. We have transferred, as a country, a lot of players to MLS and Mexico and they have developed very well. So [through TransferRoom] we are trying to have more opportunities for that because we know they are very good leagues that can catapult our players to other countries also.”
