Director of Football Alemany leaves FC Barcelona for new project
by Jack Hyom

FC Barcelona have confirmed that Director of Football Mateu Alemany will leave the club at the end of June to pursue a new project, with Aston Villa reported as his likely next destination.

The incorporation of Mateu Alemany into the first team’s structure following Joan Laporta’s victory in the presidential elections has allowed FC Barcelona to complete operations that appeared impossible and provide the coach with a competitive team within the confines of the ongoing financial problems.

While that new project has not been announced, reports suggest that Premier League side Aston Villa are close to finalising a deal to appoint him in a senior role as they aim to build on an impressive push for European qualification this season under Unai Emery.

Appointed by Barcelona in March 2021, Alemany, who works closely with Sporting Director Jordi Cruyff at the Nou Camp, has been instrumental in the club's recent success in completing transfers despite ongoing financial issues.

Despite having a contract until 2024, Alemany informed Barcelona president Joan Laporta of his intention to leave.

In a statement, the club said: "The incorporation of Mateu Alemany into the first team’s structure following Joan Laporta’s victory in the presidential elections has allowed FC Barcelona to complete operations that appeared impossible and provide the coach with a competitive team within the confines of the ongoing financial problems.

"President Laporta has accepted this departure due to Mateu’s commitment to conduct the summer transfer business until the last moment and to be able to be consulted by the Club whenever necessary."

The club is expected to announce changes in the football executive structure as a result of Alemany's exit.

Previously Alemany was General Director at Valencia CF for two years, following two decades in executive leadership roles at RCD Mallorca.

Barcelona are reportedly lining up the club's former midfielder Deco as Alemany's successor.

Deco, the ex-Portugal international who won the UEFA Champions League with Porto as a player, is the CEO and Founder of D20 Sports, a Trusted Agency on TransferRoom.
