De Andrade quits as Corinthians Director of Football
by Jonathan Rest

Roberto de Andrade has announced his departure as Director of Football at Brazilian giants Corinthians.

Roberto is a guy I trust, a person I trust, a Director of Football I chose and for me he will would not have left Corinthians until the end of my term. But, unfortunately, with all this pressure and everything that has happened, Roberto also thinks it's better to withdraw for the good of Corinthians.

De Andrade, who had been in the post since January 2021 and before that had two spells as President, has cited personal reasons for his exit, having come under external pressure.

He will not be replaced directly at this stage. Being an election year at Corinthians, President Duílio Monteiro Alves will assume Director of Football responsibilities in partnership with Manager Alessandro Nunes.

Alves praised de Andrade's work at the club, most notably in reducing the number of contracted players from an astonishing 120 to under 50 during his tenure.

The President also said he had hoped de Andrade would stay until at least the end of his time in office.

Alves explained: "Roberto is a guy I trust, a person I trust, a football director I chose and for me he will would not have left Corinthians until the end of my term. But, unfortunately, with all this pressure and everything that has happened, Roberto also thinks it's better to withdraw for the good of Corinthians.

"I'm sad, I tried to make him stay and all that's left is to thank him for everything he did. It's a shame, there's a lot of politics in that."
