Cordón successor agreed as Planes gets Real Betis Sporting Director role
by Jack Hyom

La Liga club Real Betis have agreed the appoint Ramon Planes as their new Sporting Director and successor to the departing Antonio Cordón.

I came to contribute my grain of sand, which for some will have been less and for others it will have been more. I think I'm happy with my job. I promised that we were going to wake up the giant and we have done it together. It's a very nice goal accomplished.
Antonio Cordón
Sporting Director, Real Betis

Planes, the former Tottenham Hotspur and FC Barcelona Sporting Director, will arrive this summer.

He was most recently Sporting Director at fellow Spanish club Getafe CF, having been in his second spell there from July 2022 to March this year.

Previously, he was in the Premier League with Spurs in 2014-15 and spent the 2020-21 campaign at the Nou Camp, securing the signings of Pedri and Ronald Araújo.

During Cordón's tenure, Real Betis have operated with one of the smallest budgets in La Liga and over the past three seasons, since the coronavirus pandemic hit.

The club has managed to make a net profit of over €40m while qualifying for European football and winning the Copa del Rey.

After his departure was announced, Cordón said: "I came to contribute my grain of sand, which for some will have been less and for others it will have been more. I think I'm happy with my job. I promised that we were going to wake up the giant and we have done it together. It's a very nice goal accomplished."

They are currently fifth as they bid for a third successive top-six finish.
