Caluwé named Sports Manager of 'different calibre' Club Brugge
by Jonathan Rest

Club Brugge have confirmed the appointment of highly-rated Tom Caluwé as Sports Manager from Belgian Pro League rivals KV Mechelen.

We see Tom leave with a heavy heart, even if it is to a club with possibilities that no other team in Belgium has. We respect his choice, wish him every success and know that he will continue to carry KV Mechelen in his heart
Frank Lagast
CEO, KV Mechelen

For the past four years Caluwé (pictured) has been Sporting Director of Mechelen, and his work there earned him the Technical Director of the Year award by the BFC Pro, the association of Belgian professional trainers, for the 2021-22 season.

At Club Brugge, he will work alongside Maarten Dedobbeleer, Sport Coordinator, on the daily management of the sporting department.

He told the Mechelen club website: “I had a wonderful time here. There was previously interest from a few clubs, but I have always held back because I was in the right place here. Besides, I never felt like I could improve.

"Club Brugge is a top team of a different calibre. A very nice challenge awaits me there. Before I start, I would like to thank everyone for the professional and pleasant cooperation: all employees, staff, players, management and of course our supporters."

Mechelen said they were disappointed to see Caluwé leave, but understood they could not keep him from joining the reigning Belgian champions.

CEO Frank Lagast said: "We see Tom leave with a heavy heart, even if it is to a club with possibilities that no other team in Belgium has. We respect his choice, wish him every success and know that he will continue to carry KV Mechelen in his heart."

Mechelen have yet to decide on a replacement for Caluwé.

Club Brugge CEO Vincent Mannaert is a former speaker at a TransferRoom Summit where he revealed the club's philosophy in the transfer market that has underpinned their recent success.
