Birmingham City Women Expand Their Recruitment Network with TransferRoom's Women's Marketplace
by Greg Stubley

Director of Women's Football Hope Powell explains why the newly-promoted Barclays Women's Super League side have joined TransferRoom's Women's Marketplace as they prepare for the next chapter of the club's growth.

We've decided to join TransferRoom's Women's Marketplace because it gives us a wider scope and broadens the knowledge of what players are out there globally.

Building for the future after a return to the WSL

Fresh from securing promotion back to the Barclays Women's Super League, Birmingham City Women have become the latest club to join TransferRoom's Women's Marketplace.

The Blues sealed their return to England's top flight this summer following three seasons in the Barclays Women's Championship, marking another significant milestone in the club's long-term rebuild.

Leading that journey is Director of Women's Football Hope Powell, one of the most respected figures in the game. As former England manager, who spent 15 years in charge of the Lionesses, Powell has also held senior coaching roles at Brighton & Hove Albion and Birmingham City before transitioning into a strategic leadership position.

"The idea was always to come off the grass," Powell explained.

"I've done the Technical Director's Course through the FA, which I completed last year, so that helped the transition.

"Speaking to people that have held this role before and trying to understand what the role is has helped me shift away from the grass into this role."

Having overseen Birmingham's football operation during a period of steady progression, Powell believes the club's promotion is the result of building the right foundations on and off the pitch.

"The success of the team, in terms of establishing ourselves certainly over the last three seasons as a contender for promotion, has been really significant," she said.

"We've put in place all the support mechanisms around the team to ensure that we have the correct medical provision, high-quality coaches, and the logistics and operations piece that gives the players and staff an opportunity to do their roles.

"We've built the team around the team, and that's been a real success. The second measure was, obviously, to get promoted to the WSL."

As Birmingham prepare for life back in the WSL, strengthening recruitment processes has become an important priority.

Joining TransferRoom’s new Women’s Marketplace gives the club greater visibility of players across the world while making it easier to build relationships with clubs and agents.

"TransferRoom is a platform that houses potential players that could become free agents or provides an opportunity to negotiate if you want to buy players," Powell said.

"It houses players from across Europe and across the world.

"It also gives you access to contacting agents and gives you a snapshot of players that you're looking for or, indeed, players that you perhaps want to sell."

For Powell, one of the biggest recruitment challenges in women's football remains access to comprehensive player information.

"I think some of the biggest challenges with recruitment is not having enough data - not having enough global data," she explained.

"You don't honestly know all the players that play in women's football because there is no platform that holds everything, unlike the men's game where most games are shown across the world.

"It isn't the same in women's football. You need somebody dedicated that can trawl through footage, make contacts with other associations, and have a wider overview of the landscape of women's football globally."

She also believes geographical access remains a challenge for clubs looking to recruit internationally.

"I think it's just global accessibility of the market of women's football," Powell said.

"Europe is pretty accessible, but the Far East and the Americas are a bit difficult.

"That kind of hinders when you're trying to look at players from different countries and different associations. If that was more accessible, it would be easier to dive a little bit deeper and recruit from those countries or those places."

Those challenges are exactly why Birmingham City decided to join TransferRoom's Women's Marketplace.

"We've decided to join TransferRoom because it gives us a wider scope and broadens the knowledge of what players are out there globally," Powell said.

"It allows us to make really good connections with other agents across the globe and gives us greater access and insight into players that are free and available."

Powell also attended TransferRoom's inaugural Women’s Football Forum at Stamford Bridge earlier this year, where clubs and agents from across the world came together to build relationships and discuss recruitment opportunities.

"It was a really good experience going to the first-ever TransferRoom conference for women," she said.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to network with clubs and agents, to showcase Birmingham, and for clubs and agents to showcase themselves and the players on their books.

"The attendance shows that the game is growing globally, which is fantastic. The depth and breadth of players that are available globally was a real eye-opener."
