Mikel González has been promoted to the position of Director of Football at Athletic Club.
We know the TransferRoom platform can open doors to foreign markets to make the Athletic Club brand known and to collaborate in the loan or sale of our players.
A native of Bilbao, González moves up from the Director of Development role, which Athletic are now recruiting for, and it means he also becomes Head of Sporting Operations.
He will lead men's and women's football at Athletic, as well as overseeing the implementation of the Sports Department's strategic plan which includes a strategy for first-team football and their Lezama training centre.
Since his arrival at Athletic, González has a pivotal role in squad planning, as well as loan deals and development of the young players at a club that only develops and fields players from the Basque regions of France and Spain.
He has also had a key role in Athletic becoming members of TransferRoom, complementing their unique recruitment strategy to attract a wider pool of buyers for their talents by gaining direct access to decision-makers at more than 650 clubs worldwide.
"We know the TransferRoom platform can open doors to foreign markets to make the Athletic Club brand known and to collaborate in the loan or sale of our players," González said.
"Athletic Club's philosophy is limited to Basque players only, so we are not looking for solutions in that sense.
"But for us the solutions go in two ways: possible collaboration with international clubs for the transfer or sale of players; and collaborations with international clubs for knowledge of their philosophies, work methods and academy and training models."
Prior to joining the LaLiga side, he was at fellow Spanish club Deportivo Alavés, most recently in the Assistant Sporting Director role after spells as Head of the Academy and CEO at NK Istra 1961, a Croatian club belonging to Deportivo.
Meanwhile, Miguel Torrecilla is on the hunt for a new job in football after leaving Real Zaragoza.
The experienced Spaniard had been Sporting Director at Zaragoza since December 2020 after joining from Waasland Beveren in Belgium. He has also held that role at the likes of Sporting Gijon, Real Betis and Celta Vigo.
Real Zaragoza are said to be closing in on a new Sporting Director.
