Swiss club BSC Young Boys have promoted their former player, Steve von Bergen, to Sporting Director, with Christoph Spycher taking on a new role as Head of the Sports Commission.
It is a great honour for me, a challenge and an opportunity at the same time to be Sporting Director at YB. I am very happy to help shape the future in this functioning team.
Von Bergen (pictured above) has signed a three-year contract at Young Boys, who finished third in the Swiss Super League this season after a run of four successive title wins.
The 39-year-old spent the final six years of his playing career with YB before he retired in 2019, and went onto work with the club's youth team.
Von Bergen, who won 50 caps for Switzerland, said: "It is a great honour for me, a challenge and an opportunity at the same time to be Sporting Director at YB. I am very happy to help shape the future in this functioning team. I would like to thank the board of directors and management for the trust they have placed in me and I will do everything in my power to ensure that YB can regain its old strength."
Spycher (pictured below) had been Sporting Director for six years, and despite having offers of employment abroad, he has also signed a new three-year contract and remains in overall control of the sports department and will sit on the board of directors.
Additionally, the club have announced Ernst Graf will continue to be a member of the board of directors and the sports commission as a sports representative and, as before, will also take care of the concerns of the youngsters and the YB women.
Spycher said: "I am very pleased that we have found these solutions in the spirit of YB. In this way, we are even more broadly positioned for the future in the sports department and can continue to take on the great challenges that await us as a team. It was important to me that we can increase the sporting competence in the club again."
