On the Move
Schmedes in as Vitesse Technical Director; Klos follows Spors to Genoa
by Jonathan Rest

Vitesse Arnhem have selected Benjamin Schmedes as the successor to Johannes Spors as their new Technical Director.

Benjamin stands for a strong vision, a modern and innovative approach and a focus on both the short and long term. He has a broad network, knows the Dutch market well and is committed to training and developing talent. Benjamin's profile fits in seamlessly with football and the development we pursue.

The 36-year-old Schmedes (pictured) has signed a contract with the Eredivisie club until mid-2024.

Meanwhile, Vitesse announced that Marcel Klos, who has been acting Technical Director since Spors departure at the end of 2021, has also left the club to follow Spors to Italy.

Spors is now General Manager at Genoa CFC.

Schmedes has been out of the game since leaving his role as Managing Director of Sport at VfL Osnabrück in Germany's 3. Liga at the end of the 2020-21 season.

He joined the club in late 2017 as Sporting Director, and is a former Head of Scouting at Hamburger SV.

Schmedes said: “After leaving VfL Osnabrück, I consciously took the time to think about my next step. When Vitesse came my way, I was immediately interested... I am drawn to the football philosophy and the potential of the club, believing in more. With the ambition to structurally play European football, but also with a focus on their own academy. I am going to use the coming time to help the club, the staff, to get to know the players and the rest of my new colleagues well, but we also immediately get to work with the files on the table. Of course, the focus will also be on next season.”

Pascal van Wijk, Vitesse General Director, added: “Benjamin fits very clearly in the path we have taken with Vitesse, when it comes to knowledge, experience and football vision... Benjamin stands for a strong vision, a modern and innovative approach and a focus on both the short and long term. He has a broad network, knows the Dutch market well and is committed to training and developing talent. Benjamin's profile fits in seamlessly with football and the development we pursue.”
