Mamelodi Sundowns bring TransferRoom to South Africa
by Jack Hyom

Treble-winning Mamelodi Sundowns have become the first South African club to join TransferRoom, global football’s leading digital marketplace.

As a club, we want to be globally competitive and it’s about introducing individuals who can come here and encourage different individuals to reach their full potential.
Tlhopane Motsepe
Chairman, Mamelodi Sundowns

Sundowns will get direct access to a global network of decision-makers from more than 650 clubs across 100 leagues in 60 countries, as well as real-time intelligence on players on the TransferRoom platform, giving the club the edge over their intercontinental rivals.

Sundowns, who won the domestic treble in 2021-22, are now looking to build on their historic season by gaining further success in the international transfer market.

They have won more league titles than any other South African club, with 12 since the PSL launched in 1996-97 and five in a row.

The Pretoria-based club will now aim to go further than their run to the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, Africa’s elite cup competition, in 2021-22, and to challenge for the trophy on a regular basis. Sundowns have won the tournament once in 2016-17.

Sundowns have big ambitions to make an impact on the global stage and attract a wider pool of stars worldwide, as outlined by the hiring of Sporting Director Flemming Berg in April.

“As a club, we want to be globally competitive and it’s about introducing individuals who can come here and encourage different individuals to reach their full potential," Chairman Tlhopane Motsepe said upon Berg's appointment.

PSL clubs are allowed to register a maximum of five non-South African players at a time, with the exception only being when non-South African players have obtained permanent residency.

At present the club's foreign contingent includes Uruguayan forward Gastón Sirino and Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko complimenting a core of South African players and talents from other African countries including Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Sundowns are set to mark the new partnership by attending the TransferRoom Summit - Deal Day 2022, with decision-makers from more than 180 clubs in 45+ countries meeting on 16 June in Madrid for fast-paced transfer talks as they combine months’ worth of negotiations to supercharge their summer transfer business.
