Behind the deals
Leading English clubs mastering loan market on TransferRoom
by Jonathan Rest

Loans deals play a significant role in the development of young players and clubs in England’s top two divisions increasingly turned to TransferRoom over the summer to get deals done, new analysis has revealed.

Championship TransferRoom clients averaged almost three more loan outplacements per club than non-TransferRoom Championship clubs.

Making online connections count

Across all 44 Premier League and Championship clubs, TransferRoom clients successfully outplaced 6.5 loans per club on average during the summer transfer window, compared with 3.8 for non-TransferRoom clients.

According to data crunched by TransferRoom, TransferRoom clients in the Premier League and Championship clients averaged 0.79 loan out deals each through the platform, with this figure rising to 1.2 deals per club at Premier League level.

Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion were the most active, each out-placing five players on loan through the platform.

Brighton’s Pathway Development Manager David Weir told TransferRoom about some of those deals earlier in the window.

In comparison Arsenal and Everton loaned out fewer players to the lower leagues in England, but 36% and 33%, respectively, of their outgoing loan business was conducted on TransferRoom.

In the Championship, Huddersfield Town led the way, with 75% of their loan deals done on the platform - by far the highest proportion of the summer - with rivals Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Reading all scoring above 30%.

Indeed, Championship TransferRoom clients averaged almost three more loan outplacements per club than non TransferRoom Championship clubs, highlighting how football’s online marketplace is helping to map out the career paths of young players.

Only three clubs, all in the Championship, did not send any players out on loan, one of which being Derby County, under a transfer embargo and therefore unwilling to sanction such short-term exits.

Unsurprisingly, considering the size and strengths of their squads, Manchester City and Chelsea have the most players out on loan this season, 21 and 20, respectively, with Brighton, Watford, Manchester United, Wolves and Arsenal also all in double figures for temporary outgoings.

Manchester City, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Burnley, and Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City in the Championship, all loaned out five players to clubs in League 1 and League 2, while Portsmouth, MK Dons, Accrington Stanley and Mansfield Town were the biggest recipients of players from the Premier League and Championship, all taking 5 each.

Across the summer transfer window, TransferRoom’s data team calculated that Premier League and Championship clubs loaned out close to 270 players, of which over 11% of those deals were facilitated on the platform.
