LASK step up Sporting Director hunt after Thalhammer exit
by Jonathan Rest

LASK have accelerated their search for a new Sporting Director after Manager Dominik Thalhammer was sacked.

We lack the conviction that under the current pressure - triggered by the recent poor results and performances - Dominik will manage to bring our team back into the form we need to achieve our goals for the season.
Siegmund Gruber
President, LASK

Thalhammer had held the title of Manager and Sporting Director, but the Austrian club want to split the roles and had been looking for a specific Sporting Director for the past few weeks.

That search will now be stepped up after Thalhammer was released following a 2-0 home defeat against Austria Wien on September 12.

Andreas Wieland has stepped up from Assistant Coach to first team Manager until the winter break.

Thalhammer had only been at the club since the start of the 2020-21 season, in which the club finished fourth and lost the final of the Austrian Cup to RB Salzburg. LASK are competing in this year's UEFA Europa Conference League.

LASK President Siegmund Gruber said: “You can't deny that Dominik gave everything for LASK and achieved a lot: he played a great European Cup season with our team and had a strong autumn. We have twice reached the group stages with him and another Cup final after 21 years. He was responsible for some of the best games in LASK history. He is undisputedly a football expert.

"But we lack the conviction that under the current pressure - triggered by the recent poor results and performances - Dominik will manage to bring our team back into the form we need to achieve our goals for the season."

Thalhammer leaves the club in 11th position in the Austrian Bundesliga, with just six points from seven matches.
