Ex-PSG exec Henrique to lead new recruitment strategy at QSL
by Jonathan Rest

The Qatar Stars League has appointed Antero Henrique as its first-ever Sporting Director.

We’ve developed the new strategy with the aim of providing competitive, high-quality football entertainment and, on this basis, we’re pleased to sign one of the most prominent sports directors in the world, Antero Henrique, who was chosen with great care as he was among a number of candidates to assume this responsibility.

Henrique (pictured right) is a former Sporting Director of European giants FC Porto and Paris Saint-Germain, which he left in 2019.

The recruitment process was led by executive search firm Nolan Partners.

The experienced Portuguese executive will oversee a Central Scouting Team (CST) that will work with the scouts at individual clubs to help them bring in talent that is matched to each club's philosophy and requirements.

Henrique and his CST will be tasked with identifying players with future sell-on value, so that the QSL becomes a seller's league, not just a buyer's league.

Ahmed Khellil Abbassi, Executive Director of Competitions and Football Development at the QSL, said: “We’ve developed the new strategy with the aim of providing competitive, high-quality football entertainment and, on this basis, we’re pleased to sign one of the most prominent sports directors in the world, Antero Henrique, who was chosen with great care as he was among a number of candidates to assume this responsibility.

“We’re optimistic about implementing the new strategy to transform the QNB Stars League into the ranks of global championships, and making it a platform for talented players, coaches and administrators.”

Henrique added: “We believe that we can maximise the assets already in place and work together with all the stakeholders, specially the QSL clubs, to elevate the level of football and reinforce the brand of each competition. The opportunity we’ve in our hands is something unique. With a common policy, based on synergies and a global vision, football in Qatar will make a step forward and will be taken as an example for quality, organisation and sustainable business model.”

The finances on offer in Qatar has made the QSL an attractive destination for big name players, like Santi Cazorla, James Rodriguez, Toby Alderweireld, Andre Ayew, Javi Martinez and Steven N'Zonzi. But all are aged 30 or over and in most cases in the final years of their playing careers.
