On the Move
Crew's Onstad returns to Houston as Dynamo GM
by Jonathan Rest

Houston Dynamo has raided fellow MLS club Columbus Crew to appoint Pat Onstad as their new General Manager.

As we went through the search process, Pat clearly showed himself to be the best person for the job based on his experience in a number of leadership roles, his track record of success at every stop and his understanding of our league, our club and our community.

Onstad had been Technical Director and Vice-President of Soccer Operations at the Crew, helping them to win the 2020 MLS Cup and the 2021 Campeones Cup, the competition that involves teams from Liga MX.

The former goalkeeper won back-to-back MLS Cup titles with the Dynamo in 2006 and 2007, and returns to the club to succeed Matt Jordan, who left in late August.

Ted Segal, Owner, Houston Dynamo, said: “As we went through the search process, Pat clearly showed himself to be the best person for the job based on his experience in a number of leadership roles, his track record of success at every stop and his understanding of our league, our club and our community.

“His preparation and attention to detail during the interview process illustrated the qualities that I believe will make him successful as our general manager. I look forward to working with him to build the Dynamo into championship contenders once again.”

Onstad joined the Crew in 2014 as an Assistant Coach under now-US men's national team Manager Gregg Berhalter, and was promoted to Technical Director and VP of Soccer Operations prior to the 2019 season.

He is a former Assistant Coach at D.C. United and Chief Scout and Manager of Football Partnerships for Toronto FC.

Crew pay tributes

Tim Bezbatchenko, President and General Manager, Crew, said: “I am immensely proud of Pat as he has earned this opportunity and elevated role within MLS. Having had the pleasure of working with Pat over the past three seasons, I know that his knowledge of the league and dedication to the role will help him to excel as a general manager.

Pat’s experience both in coaching and in scouting provide him the tools to evaluate talent. He has also learned the complex league roster rules and salary cap, which is another integral part of the role especially in this league as things are constantly changing and evolving.”

Jordan had joined the Dynamo in November 2014.
