On the Move
Charlotte FC to lose Technical Director Nicholls to Crew before MLS bow
by Jonathan Rest

Marc Nicholls is set to leave Charlotte FC, before the club has even debuted in Major League Soccer, to join Columbus Crew.

At the Crew, Nicholls will focus on the development of players along the pathway from academy to first team, as well as the development of club coaches.

Nicholls (pictured) was hired as Charlotte FC's Technical Director in January 2020, but will now take on the same job at the Crew, the 2020 MLS champions.

The Athletic was the first to report the move.

At the Crew, Nicholls will focus on the development of players along the pathway from academy to first team, as well as the development of club coaches.

He succeeds Pat Onstad, who joined Houston Dynamo as General Manager in November 2021.

However, Nicholls is not expected to oversee scouting, player negotiations and the Crew's salary cap, with those responsibilities lying with General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko, supported by Assistant General Manager Corey Wray, Director of Player Personnel Issa Tall and Director of Scouting Neil McGuinness & Player Recruitment.

Before joining Charlotte FC, Nicholls spent almost seven years with the Seattle Sounders focusing on player development. He began as an academy coach before being promoted to academy director in 2014. He also served as the club’s director of player development.
